Kristallnacht : Burning of the Synagogues

I chose this image because it says "Work Makes You Free", it's on the gate for one of the Concentration Camps in Germany. This picture makes everything feel grim because of the color and the quote just makes me angry. "Work Makes You Free" is a terrible thing to say, because the people in that camp will be working terribly hard and they most likely would never be free. Most would die or would be killed in the gas chambers.

Kristallnacht is the burning of the synagogues and the destruction of Jewish businesses. This occured on November the 9th to the 10th, 1938. The Nazi's would enter Jewish homes and destroy everything, leaving shattered glass behind. Many Jewish people would be sent to Concentration Camps, where they would either be killed or sent to do harsh labour.

Hitler would dominate children's minds telling them through story books and posters that Jewish people were greedy, corrupt, repulsive and trying to overpower Germany. This is called Propaganda.

Propaganda, information that is spread for the purpose of promoting some cause. The Nazi's used propaganda to make the Concentration Camps greater than they really were. They would film happy children playing in the camps, whilst in reality they would be doing torturous labor.

I think what the Nazi's did to the Jews (Kristallnacht) was unfair for the Jews because the Nazi's broke down their houses, windows and businesses, and it was the Jews who had to pay for all damage costs.

I don't think people stood up to Adolf Hitler because of fear. Some people who objected to his ways fled the country, people were afraid of Hitler because he could kill their family and he or herself, or perchance he would send them to a concentration camp.

If I was in Hitler's time, and I was a Jew, I don't think I would have stood up for myself. If I did I would know that my family's life would be at stake, and there would be so many Nazi's against one poor woman. This isn't the bravest choice, but perhaps a safer one. I would be doing this to save my family, but if I was a single lone woman, I think I would stand up for myself, even if I would be killed afterwards.

Later on, I think people regretted appointing Hitler Chancellor in 1933, I don't think the people of Germany really thought about the consequences, but when the time came when they knew their mistake, it was too late. Nothing could be done.
